Mapping the open education landscape: citation network analysis of historical open and distance education research
The authors conduct a network mapping of citations within the OER space. They identify eight district focus areas with a relatively small amount of overlap, namely (1) OER, (2) social media, (3) OA publishing, (4) open practices, (5) distance education and open learning, (6) e-learning, (7) MOOCs, and (8) open education in schools. The authors note that there analysis reveals "a lack of solid connections between what intuitively would appear to be strongly related areas" (p. 121), and highlight the importance of studies that serve as "nodes" (p. 121) by connecting the study areas.
