ECDC’s main role as an agency of the European Union is to strengthen Europe’s defences against communicable diseases. In its first ten years, ECDC worked together with all EU/EEA countries in response to public health threats and emerging diseases.

With a spirit of lifelong learning, ECDC offers a professional development programme for communicable disease prevention and control professionals with responsibility for serious cross-border health threats. The programme includes: summer school (also targeting EPIET and EUPHEM supervisors), short courses, senior exchange, webinars, communities of practice.
