OERcamp and the Global Digital Library are teaming up in this hackathon with the ambitious goal to launch German as a new language on the Global Digital Library before the end of the hackathon event. We are looking for volunteers that speak German and are able to translate simple math games and children's books from English. The Global Digital Library is in a very close collaboration with the H5P core team, so this hackathon is also a perfect opportunity for anyone that wants to learn more about H5P and at the same time contribute to open educational games and books for children in Germany. The translation process in itself is very easy to learn and requires no knowledge of H5P.
Hackathon mission The Global Digital Library (GDL) team has 60 math games and 60 books that we would like to translate into German. Our goal is to translate and publish these games and books before the end of the hackathon event. The volunteers participating in this event will see their contribution go live in a matter of hours.
You can contribute as much as you like during these two days. Translating one book normally takes about 45 minutes, translating a math game takes 20 minutes. We are looking for participants who can translate from English to German. We are also looking for translators, linguistic experts or language teachers that could serve as proofreaders during the hackathon.
Who are we? The GDL mission is to increase the availability of high-quality reading resources in underserved languages worldwide. “Reading resources” refer primarily to reading instruction books and storybooks for leisure reading, but the GDL also offers more interactive resources, such as literacy and math games.
The Global Digital Library is funded by the Norwegian Government and developed in close partnership with USAID, Unicef, Unesco and the World Bank. We collect existing high-quality open educational reading resources, and make them available on web, mobile and for print. The primary licenses for content on the GDL are CC BY and CC BY-SA. The GDL currently offers 6000+ books in 84 languages. We want German to be language number 85!
