Bliss et al (2013) conduct a survey of 125 students and 11 faculty across seven community colleges in the United States to understand their perceptions of OER. The study reports that "the majority of students and faculty had a positive experience using the open textbooks, appreciated the lower costs, and perceived the texts as being of high quality." More specifically, the classrooms used materials prepared by Project Kaleidoscope (PK). 41% of students felt that the PK texts were higher-quality than texts in other courses, 56% felt that they were about the same quality, and only 3% indicated that the PK materials were lower-quality than texts in other courses. Similarly, 10 of the 11 teachers surveyed indicated that students were equally (6) or more (3) prepared than students in previous semesters, where traditional materials were used. However, 82% of teachers reported that they spent somewhat more or much more time preparing to teach using the OER materials.
