The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is a private foundation, established by Hewlett-Packard cofounder William Redington Hewlett and his wife Flora Lamson Hewlett in 1966. It awards grants to a variety of liberal and progressive causes. The Hewlett Foundation was the main financial supporter of open educational resources in the early years and has spent more than $110 million in the 2002 to 2010 period.
Where would Open Education be without the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation? The strong commitment of the foundation for OER from its very beginning on is unique, its influence for the global uptake of Open Education cannot be overestimated.
